A look inside the John Lewis flower shop

The indoor plant trend shows no sign of slowing down and we're all for it. Plants add life, colour and in some cases, delicious scents to our homes. From towering Monstera plants to trailing succulents, there's a houseplant to suit every style and space. Join us for an exclusive tour of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show here.

But what if you're new to the plant parent world? Which houseplants should you choose as a beginner, and how do you look after them?

We popped down to John Lewis Oxford Street to ask the resident plant experts which plants they recommend for plant newbies and got some top tips on how to look after them.

Their top five easytocarefor houseplants for beginners:

Peace Lily Peace lilies are known for their beautiful, white, saillike flowers (actually spathes), which have a long vase life and make great cut flowers, and their ability to survive on neglect.

Spider Plant One of the most popular houseplants, spider plants are easy to grow and look after. They only need watering once a week and can tolerate bright, indirect light or shade. Due to their long, trailing stems, they're great for hanging baskets or on shelves.

Snake Plant Snake plants are a great choice if you're forgetful when it comes to watering. They're drought tolerant, so only need watering every few weeks and are happy in both bright or low light.

ZZ Plant ZZ plants are very lowmaintenance and are ideal for beginners. They're evergreen, so won't lose their leaves and only need watering every three to four weeks.

Cast Iron Plant The cast iron plant is one of the hardest houseplants to kill. It can survive low light, infrequent watering and even being completely neglected for short periods.

Top tips on how to care for your new houseplant:

Water

Most houseplants only need watering once a week. Water them until the water starts to drip out the drainage hole at the bottom.

Light

Most houseplants are happy in bright, indirect light. Keep away from direct sunlight as this could burn the leaves.

Drainage

Make sure the pot you choose has drainage holes in the bottom. This will help to prevent your plant from becoming waterlogged and rotting.

Fertiliser

Fertilise your houseplants every two to three weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Repotting

As your plant grows, you will need to repot it into a larger pot. Do this in spring or summer.

Common problems

Yellowing leaves This could be a sign of overwatering or under watering. Check the soil to see if it is dry or soggy.

Brown leaves This could be a sign of sunburn or under watering. Move your plant to a shadier spot or increase the water.

Drooping leaves This could be a sign of overwatering or lack of light. Check the soil and move your plant to a brighter spot.

Pests If you see any pests on your plant, such as aphids or spider mites, you can treat them with an insecticidal spray.
